kinda tempted to somehow trade in my D3 for a D700 w/ a grip…

seems more versatile… just can’t do faster than 8fps on D700 w/ grip.

If you do decide to try and work this trade out, give me a shout. I’d definitely be interested.

Personally, I’ve always preferred the pro body shape. However I agree completely that the D700 is more versatile. Definitely nice to have the option of removing the grip and having a smaller walk around camera. I love mine.

Does durability mean anything to you? Autofocus, do you use it? Long sequences (I dont know about the buffer in D700)? Do you need 2 card slots?

These issues are the obvious pros of the D3 for me. I dont know if theres a difference in the image processing.

aha, this is what i was hoping to hear, or hoping to hear wasn’t a concern really.

i was just thinking if i could deal with an f100 vs an f5 or f6, D700 is probably manageable, and D3 a luxury.

I know the D3 is marketed as being more rugged etc, but I’m not sure it’s makes much difference in real life, I’ve done 300,000+ on my D700 shutter.
The AF is great too, if the D3 is any faster/better it’s not by an amount that I could notice.
Best thing about the D3 is the 100% viewfinder, but these days there’s a screen on the back of the camera, it’s not like you’re in for any surprises with a 95% one.
The 2 reasons I’d choose D700 over a D3 every time: 1/320th flash sync and built in sensor cleaning.

by ruggedness i mean the ability to take physical abuse.

Ive never owned a D700, just repeating fairly reliable quotes, regarding the AF; i guess it has a lot to do with what you use it for.

2 card slots are important to me. Not the case for most people, I guess.

D3 is big, bulky, heavy, expensive and old.
But it is different from D700

The D700 w/ grip is actually a little taller than a D3

I’ve never needed dual slots or bit more fps, which is why I picked the D700 and never looked back really

D700 w/ grip is taller? interesting.
i imagine i’d leave the grip off almost always until someone says they want to do a trick for a seq.

how bout batt life on D700? it’s pretty crazy good on D3, like you almost don’t need 2, but i bought a 2nd when buying it.

how serious would you be @alexhondas?

i’d have to see it in person and handle it before trading though.
